Tales of Spiritual Elders: Unspoken Incidents and Narratives

Selected by Syed Azhar Inayat Shah – The City of Kohat

You might have read numerous stories and narratives based on the incidents involving spiritual elders. Today, in this gathering, we are documenting some incidents linked to famous personalities that are astonishing. These incidents have been selected by our esteemed friend, Mr. Syed Azhar Inayat Ali Shah. It is hoped that readers interested in spiritual knowledge will appreciate his efforts.

Maulana Hali’s Grandson’s Epilepsy and the Practitioner of Surah Muzzammil

Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali often traveled between Panipat and Delhi.

Once, when Khwaja Hasan Nizami visited, Hali mentioned that his grandson suffered from epilepsy. Despite trying various doctors and healers, there was no benefit. Khwaja Sahab was asked to recommend someone who could provide a talisman or prayer for healing. He mentioned a practitioner in Rawalpindi known for using Surah Muzzammil. Hali then wrote to his son, Maulana Sajjad Hussain, an education inspector in Rawalpindi, to meet this practitioner. Upon visiting, the practitioner shifted his position, faced towards Panipat, recited Surah Muzzammil once, and blew over it. Maulana Hali’s grandson was cured of epilepsy, and Maulana Hali was greatly impressed by the practitioner’s sincerity. (Rizah Al-Mas, page 427)

The Deadly Effect of Evil Eye

During a poetry gathering in Jaunpur, a couplet was presented:

“Nobody brings news of my beloved to me.”

A young poet created a verse so powerful that it attracted the evil eye, leading to his death three days later. His verse expressed a wish to be carried by his tears to his beloved. (Mawaiz Akhtar, number 58, page 57)

The Remarkable Incident of the Last Verse of Surah Taubah

It is narrated by Muhammad ibn Ka’b that a military expedition was sent towards Rome. One companion broke his leg. Left under a tree with provisions, a mysterious person advised him to place his hand on the injury and recite ﴾فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ﴿ seven times. Upon doing so, his pain vanished, the broken bone healed instantly, and he was able to join his comrades. (Mawaiz Akhtar, 58, page 71, cited from Ruh al-Ma’ani)

The Influence of a Yogi’s Spell

Maulvi Abdul Hanan Punjabi, a devotee of Hazrat Raipuri, encountered a yogi who cast a spell on him, leading to thoughts of converting to Hinduism. He rushed to Sheikh ul Hadith Maulana Zakariya, who advised him to visit Raipuri immediately. After spending three days asleep under Raipuri’s care, he awoke still troubled by the same thoughts. Hazrat Raipuri then pointed his finger towards Maulvi Abdul Hanan’s heart, changing his heart’s condition and dispelling the yogi’s spell. (Monthly Lohalak, February 2003, page 43)

Protection of Hasan of Basra

Hasan of Basra sought refuge in Habib Ajmi’s prayer area to escape Hajjaj bin Yusuf’s soldiers. Despite Habib Ajmi revealing Hasan’s location, the soldiers could not see him. Hasan remained invisible even when soldiers searched multiple times. Habib Ajmi had prayed for Hasan’s safety by reciting Ayatul Kursi, Surah Ikhlas, and the last two verses of Surah Baqarah, entrusting Hasan’s protection to Allah. (Tazkirat al-Awliya, pages 46-47)

Note: Hasan of Basra is among the four esteemed successors, including Saeed bin Musayyib, Saeed bin Jubair, and Owais Qarni. He was a direct disciple of Ali. His virtues and merits are well-documented in Islamic texts.
